Clare Island Adventure

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Travel Tuesday, but this past weekend myself, Billy and my family were lucky enough to get a chance to travel out to the small(but not too small) island of Clare Island off the Mayo coast. My mother’s family originates from the Island, being a direct descendant of Grace O’Malley the famous Irish Pirate Queen, so it was nice to visit with cousins that I had not seen in a very long time!

Over 20 years ago I took my very first trip out to the Island and honestly not a whole lot has changed since then. The boat trip was amazing and wasn’t half as long as I remember, we had to take the later boat so we crossed just as the sun was starting to make her decent, beautiful time of the day!

The B&B that we stayed in was only a stone’s throw away from the main Quay area of the Island and had one of the best views of  Grace O’Malley’s Castle.  After a very quick drop off and change me and Billy took off on a short walk around while there was still some light left. The smell and sound of the ocean were amazing! The air was so clean and crisp and the views of the mainland and the famous Croagh Patrick(nicknamed The Reek) were breathtaking!

That night I sat out on the beach for a while and looked up at the stars, I wish I had a camera good enough to capture how amazing they were! For the first time since living in India, I could see the stars so clearly! And, the best thing was we could actually see the Milky Way!! I couldn’t get a picture, but it looked like load’s of stars with lots of ‘space dust’ pretty much in a line across the sky. Amazing to behold!

Just as amazing was the Sunrise the next morning, I woke up early and walked down to the Castle to watch it come up right beside The Reek. I’ve seen many a sunrise, but none as beautiful as this 🙂

After another quick walk about it was time to catch the Ferry home and start the long journey through the beautiful Mayo ‘hills’ I didn’t get to see the whole of the Island but sure that just means I’ll have something new to explore the next time 😉

Mayo is a beautiful part of Ireland and if you ever get a chance to visit it Clare Island is a must see! If you are planning on heading up that way then here are a few useful links

All The Best
