Adventure Time Episode 1: Crete

I still can’t believe that it’s been a year since I was in Crete 😀 The island is the biggest of the Greek Islands and really has a lot to offer, from great nightlife to crystal clear water, fantastic hikes and the oldest bronze age settlement in Europe. Crete really has something for everyone:)

I stayed just outside the main city of Heraklion in a small township called Hersonissos, which had some really great places to eat and drink, whether it was for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I spent my first days getting used to the temperature difference, I’d come from a cold 15c to a high of 32c, but by the end I was loving it 🙂 My hotel wasn’t too far away from the beach so for the first few mornings I’d walk down, grab some breakfast from this amazing little bakery, then head over and get a beach chair for a few hours and enjoy the fantastic views 😀

On my third day, I ventured out of Hersonissos to the capital Heraklion, which was only a short bus ride away. The city has a lot to take in, from old-style museums and modern shopping centres to traditional markets and food shops. I took a group walking tour which took us all around the city and to places you wouldn’t think of going. We visited a few little old style shops that sold bread, cheese, coffee and of course olives. We then sat and ate lunch while looking out onto the bay 🙂 Fabulous!

On my second last day,  I took a bus tour to the Palace of Knossos which is the largest bronze age settlement in Greece and is considered Europe’s oldest city. What a beautiful site it was. The day I went the sun was beaming down which made everything look all that more beautiful! To see the artwork and the way the palace was build was amazing. The ancient legend of the Minotaur in the Labyrinth is based here. After the tour was over you got to visit the Historical Museum in Heraklion to see many of the artifacts that were recovered from the site.

And that was my trip to Crete 🙂 I have to say Its one of the few places I would go back and visit again. As I said before, if you’re into shopping, walking or just sitting on the beach Crete really has it all 🙂

If you’ve ever been to there let me know how you got on or if you have any other questions about my trip please let me know in the comments 🙂
